2019-2020 KCC JEE Graduate Fellow
Alicia Foley
Japanese Literature and Cultures
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Alicia Foley first began her studies of Japanese language and culture as an undergraduate at the College of William and Mary, majoring in English and East Asian Studies.  She continued to use Japanese language in her career after graduation, working as a translator and clerk at a Japanese company in Michigan.  Wanting to further pursue her interest in Japanese culture, she earned a Master’s degree in Japanese literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and entered the Ph.D. program at University of Wisconsin—Madison.  Her research interests focus on the literature and culture of Japan’s Edo period (1600-1868), especially popular culture and fan activities.  The Edo period saw a flourishing of literacy and printed works, much of which has not been studied in-depth.  She hopes to further research both in Edo period culture, and the relatively new field of fandom studies.  As a teacher, she also wants to introduce students to new ideas and perspectives outside of the traditional literary canon, and examine how those ideas relate to contemporary culture.
